Week 5 readings In this Unit, we will read the following chapters in Financial Management Theory and Practice : ? Chapter 10 ? The Cost of Capital ? Chapter 11 ? The Basics of Capital Budgeting Brigham, E. F., Ehrhardt, M. C. (2008). Financial management theory and practice. Mason: South-Western Cengage. The purpose of Unit 5 is to learn how the cost of capital is developed for use in capital budgeting. We observe that the cost of capital used is a weighted average of the types of capital the firm uses-- typically debt, preferred stock, and common equity. Unit 5 also describes techniques used in capital budgeting analysis. We learn that NPV, net present value, is the best capital budgeting decision rule used by most firms. The format for the article review including length, references, and layout is discussed on the following pages. To complete the article review, you should research the assigned topic to provide a measure of information about the topic?s significance to the current business climate regarding financial management. References Remember that reference sources must be limited to the:Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Barron?s, Investors? Business Daily, The Economist, or an academic journal article from a respected finance journal. These resources are available in the Kaplan University library. Other sources must be approved prior to submission. A minimum of 2 reference sources are required for editorial balance. APA Format and Length The article review should be a minimum of 500 words and be submitted in APA format. The article review layout is simple. It should consist of the following three headings: 1. Overview/Summary 2. Opinion/Analysis 3. Relevance to Financial Management. I?ll be looking for an executive style overview/summary, with the majority of your article review content in the Opinion/Analysis and Relevance to Financial Management sections. The Overview/Summary section should include a statement of the author?s hypothesis or proposition. This section should be the briefest. The Opinion/Analysis section should demonstrate your critical thinking and analysis of the subject matter. The Relevance to Financial Management section should offer an insight-building summary, recommendations, findings and conclusions.
