Assignment 2 requires you to research and write a paper on a topic related to the financial services industry in Canada.
Assignment 2 requires you to research and write a paper on a topic related to the financial;services industry in Canada. Your research can include printed or electronic material (e.g.;newspapers, books, Web sites) or a combination of these.;There are four steps to completing Assignment 2, read through the entire assignment before you;begin.;Step 1Choose a Topic; The following are general guidelines to help you choose a research topic. Your topic should deal;with the practice, delivery, or profession of financial planning. You should not choose a technical;area such as tax planning or investments, as these are covered in the course itself.;Your topic may relate to;regulations regarding offering financial planning services;ethical issues involved in offering financial advice;requirements and qualifications to be a financial planner in Canada (these vary by;province);professional designations available to financial planners, as offered by the banking;investment, and insurance industries, as well as other professional bodies;trends in the financial services industry.;Possible specific topics include;fiduciary duty, conflicts of interest, and negligence in offering financial planning;designation programs offered in the banking industry;professional requirements of those who offer insurance products;reasons why regulators in Canada are unable to work together;competition in the mutual fund industry;the impact of the Internet on delivery of financial services.;These topics are just possibilities, you are free to choose your own.;Step 2Research Your Topic;Search for and read printed and online material. When you consult material available on the;Internet, be critical of its quality and point of view. Some material is simply biased and;uninformed opinion. Other information may be promotional material aimed at presenting a;product, organization, or company in a favourable light. The paper should provide a hypothesis;arguments for and against the hypothesis, and a supported conclusion. You should not simply;reiterate factual information. For example, it is not enough to outline the requirements to obtain a;CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation as provided on an Internet site, this information;must be part of the premise leading to some discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of the;process. It can be a good idea to compare and evaluate alternatives that may exist.;Step 3Write the Paper;FNCE322v4;Assignment 2;Sept 4, 2013;Carefully outline your paper before you begin. Ensure your paper is well organized, and that the;content progresses smoothly from one idea to the next. Concentrate on getting your ideas into a;logical sequence so the paper is easy to read and follow.;Step 4Write It Right;Students are often advised to write your paper, and then write it right. Once you settle on your;ideas in Step 3, concentrate on making sure your paper follows the established rules for proper;spelling, grammar, and sentence construction. You must include a list of references at the end;that give credit to your sources. There is no particular format required for your reference list, as;long as you are consistent and include the important information about your sources. Consult the;writing style resources at the end of this assignment.;Once you think your paper is perfect, ask someone to read it and give you feedback. Allow;yourself enough time to go back and make corrections and improve your writing. Experienced;writers estimate that 50% of the task is writing the paper and getting the ideas down, and the;other 50% is editing and revising. While you may find the editing and revising task tedious, it;makes the difference between an excellent paper and one that is just average, or even poor.;Technical Requirements;Writing style is important. Be sure you follow these guidelines;Write your paper in the third person (not the first).;Number the pages of your report.;Refer to any appendices in order (i.e., the first appendix or exhibit you refer to should be;number one).;The words their and they are plural pronouns, be sure you match them with plural;subjects. For example, the phrase when a customer goes to their bank is incorrect, as it;uses a singular subject (a customer) and plural pronoun (their).;Use headings to organize your thoughts and focus the readers attention.;Your paper should be between 1,350 and 1,650 words in length. Marks will be assigned for;content (50%) and the use of proper grammar and sentence construction (50%).;The work you submit must be your own. You must produce all parts of your assignment;yourself. Do not include any material that has been submitted in another course.;When you use the ideas or words of others, you must give them credit. Consult the University;Calendar for a description of plagiarism, the seriousness of the offence, and how to avoid it.;Resources; The following Web sites may help you research the content of your paper and use proper writing;style and format;Content;Aim Trimark Investments;Investment Executive online newspaper;Advisor.ca;Web sites and archives for newspapers such as;FNCE322v4;Assignment 2;Sept 4, 2013;Globe and Mail;Financial Post;Writing Style;Psychology with Style: A Hypertext Writing Guide.
