Question

Question; Many discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people's opinions and comments. Please take this opportunity to introduce yourself and to learn something about each other. Then address the Discussion topic after you have completed your Reading.Quality ManagementAt this juncture you should have a firm understanding of how important operations management and operational quality management is to every successful organization. This Discussion topic challenge relates to quality and an organizations constant search for continuous improvement. Please answer the following:Select a company or organization that, in your personal experience, has produced products of "high quality."Select one product, from the company named, that you personally believe to be of exceptional quality and appraise the specific characteristics of the product that make it "high quality."Select a product (from the same company or from another company) that you believe is of "poor quality." Appraise why you found the product of "poor quality" by describing and listing any defects, and suggest ways in which that organization could improve the products quality.Make sure you are supporting your answers fully and that your source research is identified with citations and references.unit 2 discussionMany discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people?s opinions and comments. Respond to your Discussion topic after you have completed your Reading.Lean SystemsThe advent of new technologies (the Internet, computerization, etc.) and the impact of globalization (products not only available from every country but being developed in multiple countries) has increased not just the demand for goods and services but also has increased customer requirements and expectations. As such, organizations must be constantly changing to be as economically competitive as possible. This means doing more with less as the organization becomes as "lean" as possible (no fat). The operations manager must be aware of how and why lean systems are necessary. To answer the Discussion questions you will need to do additional research using the virtual library and/or Internet. In order for an organization to do more with less they must examine all facets of the production or service process. To that end address the questions below:How does just-in-time (JIT) inventory control help organizations become more lean?Where does the information on waste (waste in raw materials, waste in process and flow, etc.) come from?Should line employees be involved in making recommendations to improve lean production and processes or should this decision making be left only to management? Many discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people?s opinions and comments. Respond to your Discussion topic after you have completed your Reading.Topic 1: Product DesignList and describe briefly the elements of Product Design. Select one and apply it to a product you would like to see created in the marketplace.Topic 2: Service DesignList and describe briefly the elements of Service Design. Consider a service industry and create a short service blueprint, a series of events that has at least 5 steps. Then describe each step with a short paragraph under each step.unit 4Many discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people?s opinions and comments. Respond to your Discussion topic after you have completed your Reading.Facility DesignOperations managers must be concerned with more than final outcomes (the final product or service delivered). They must be involved in determining the processes used to develop and create the final product and how they can be created or manufactured within the current capacities of the organization.Successful organizations appear complex because they are made up of a multitude of different departments with each having a specific responsibility in the creation and delivery of the final product or service. For this question you will need to conduct research on capacity and facilities before you can prepare a complete response to the questions asked. Start this research by reviewing the Web Field Trip resources below.Web Field TripThe below websites all relate to your Discussion topic for this week. Please spend some time reviewing these websites before you compose your response.http://www.discoverdbr.com/grocerystorelayout.htmlhttp://www.foodmarketdesigns.com/http://www.wordsyouwant.com/samples/How to -Layout Your Supermarket.pdfDiscussion topicBe sure each of the questions below is addressed. Address each question individually and be careful not to combine your questions and answers:Identify a supermarket/grocery market to discuss for this Discussion topic. What departments within the market tend to be co-located (adjacent to one another)? Do you believe the co-location is planned? If so why? What departments within the market tend to be distant from one another? What purpose is accomplished by separating these departments so far apart from each other? Why is the layout of the supermarket so important to the overall delivery of the products and services provided? What recommendations would you make to the layout of the supermarket to make the layout more effective or efficient?Supply Chain ManagementA supply chain involves all the activities associated with how manufacturing, materials, facilities, personnel, transportation, inventory, and other items flow and then are transformed into goods and services. Every asset, information, and process is part of the supply chain. For this discussion you will be addressing how the supply chain works and possible issues you may encounter.Within this complex system, operation management responsibilities can be both strategic and tactical.Examine the place where you currently work, or a prior career, and identify a single service or product produced by your organization.Identify the different components of the supply chain for that product or service (list them from beginning to end). Be sure to identify which parts of the supply chain are considered "upstream" and "downstream" exchanges.Based on what you learned from your research, describe a single current issue that might negatively impact a company's global supply chain.unit 8Global Supply Chain ManagementResearch the impact of global shipping and receiving at ports around the world since September 11, 2001. What policy has been added to this field? What laws have been changed? Describe best practices in global shipping and receiving at ports in your own words, supported by your research online.Supply Chain ManagementA supply chain involves all the activities associated with how manufacturing, materials, facilities, personnel, transportation, inventory, and other items flow and then are transformed into goods and services. Think about it this way, without forecasting organizations would always be responding rather than acting.Select one industry from the list below: Bank, restaurant, health clinic/hospital, airline, or university. What specific variables would be needed by that organization in order to forecast? Be sure you explain why you selected each variable and why it is important to forecasting.Which variables are used for short-range forecasting, long-range forecasting, or for both. Make sure you support your selections.unit 10Inventory ManagementWith effective resource planning organizations can reduce inventory and service costs, improve efficiencies, and establish methods for continuous improvement. Depending upon the type of resource there is a different type of planning that must take place. This can include, material requirements planning (MRP), capacity requirements planning (CRP), enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), or product lifecycle management (PLM).Research two specific types of resource planning.Based on your research, explain whether or not you believe ERP and MRP are the only resource planning processes applicable to manufactured processes? Can either ERP or MRP be used for service industries or can they only be used for manufacturing organizations?Unit 2 [MT435:Operations Management]Page 1 of 4Assignment Details and RubricUnit 2: Quality Management and Lean Systems PaperQuality Management and Lean Systems PaperIn the modern world, businesses and individuals need to optimize their efforts to gaineffectiveness and efficiency. This one location/facility issituated on 12 acres located in a rural suburb of Smalltown, USA (Please note* the building andfacilities for Albatross Anchor are landlocked). The plant* and the administrative offices are located in the same building.(*Note: The plant includes: manufacturing, the shipping department, the receiving department, rawmaterials storage, finished product storage, and the foundry). The administrative offices are in the front of the building and the plant is located directly behind theadministrative offices (see diagram). The administrative offices have issues because they aresomewhat shabby, disorganized, and run inefficiently. The plant is antiquated, worn, dirty, and technology-deprived and it no longer meets all U.S. safetyand environmental standards. The owners of this small business have added on various processes as needs arose, within thelimited space of the plant. When Albatross Anchor first opened its doors their expertise was in themanufacturing of bell/mushroom anchors (using a foundry process). In 1989, in response tointernational competition, the owners of Albatross Anchor made the decision to expand the productline to include fabricated snag hook anchors.CustomersAlbatross Anchor is a manufacturing factory that sells only at the wholesale level.Albatross Anchors sales their products in two ways:(01) Distributors that act as the middleman. The distributor accepts bulk delivery of anchors attheir large distribution centers. At the distribution center the bulk shipment of anchors is brokenup into smaller batches and shipped to individual retail locations.(02) OEM customers that purchase anchors in large batches to be used as a component in themanufacture of boats.Albatross Anchor does not sell retail. They are strictly a wholesale organization.Unit 8 [MT435:Operations Management]Page 7 of 9ProductsThe bell anchor is manufactured primarily through a foundry process in which ore is transformed intoa liquid state and then poured into molds as part of the production process. The bell anchor is usedprimarily by freshwater marine craft. The snag hook anchor is fabricated through the bending and welding of iron rods and flat iron into ahook design. The hook design is best when used in saltwater. This hook design snags bedrock andseaweed which holds the marine craft at anchor. The snag hook anchor is used primarily for small tomedium sized saltwater marine craft. Each anchor is produced in multiple sizes to accommodate the type of watercraft, the size of thewatercraft and the place where the anchor will be used (saltwater or freshwater).ManufacturingEach anchor type requires its own unique equipment and manufacturing process. Yet, bothmanufacturing areas share the same shipping area, receiving area, warehouse area, andadministration offices. The manufacturing area of the plant has had to change to accommodate the manufacture of the twoseparate types of anchors. As each anchor requires its own manufacturing challenges themanufacturing line must be completely changed over each time the anchor type is changed. The timeto switch over from one manufacturing process/operation to the other manufacturingprocess/operation is 36 hours. The plant space is at a premium and warehousing space for raw materials and finished product islimited and located at the far south end of the building.Plant antiquation and safety issues result in small batch production only. As a result of this limitation, lead time for exceptionally large bulk orders is 3 to 4 weeks.CostsCurrent manufacturing costs are $8.00 per pound for mushroom/bell anchors and $11.00 per poundfor snag hook anchors. Albatross Anchor charges the same per unit as their competitors. However, the profit margin can sometimes be as much as 35% less (on some of the anchors) because ofoperations inefficiencies.Shipping challengesOutgoing freightUnit 8 [MT435:Operations Management]Page 8 of 9Product size, bulk, and weight and maximum load limits require that the anchors be shipped by largetruck, rail, or large ocean-going freighter. Domestic orders are usually shipped by large truck.International orders are shipped by rail and ultimately by large ocean-going freighters. These are theonly two methods of product shipment.Incoming freightReceipt of raw materials is by rail. Prior to the sale of anchors into the international market allshipments of finished product went out completely by truck and therefore all shipping activities werelimited to the east side of the building. Now, because of the limitation of shipping product into the international marketplace, all productshipments for international delivery go out of the receiving dock for the initial leg of shipment by rail.Prior to expansion into the international marketplace shipping had been limited to the shippingdepartment and receiving was limited to the receiving area. However, with this change in internationalshipping the receiving area must now do double duty ? shipping of international orders as well asreceipt of all incoming raw materials. Please view the below representation of the current building/facility set up.Unit 8 [MT435:Operations Management]Page 9 of 9Case Study 2Question 1Refer to the assignment scenario/case study.
